Indonesia, Japan Expand Park Cooperation and Carbon Investment

RRI.CO.ID, Tokyo: The Indonesian government bolsters forestry cooperation with Japan during a bilateral meeting in Tokyo, March 31, 2026. Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni ,met with Japan’s Minister of the Environment, Ishihara Hirotaka.

The meeting focused on forestry, conservation, and climate change control. The Indonesian delegation included several senior officials from the Ministry of Forestry.

They were Head of Public Relations and Foreign Cooperation Bureau Ristianto Pribadi. It was also attended by Director of Species and Genetic Conservation, Ahmad Munawir and Forestry Attaché, Ima Yudin Rayaningtyas.

Japan’s Minister of the Environment expressed appreciation to the Indonesian government. The appreciation was directed to the Ministry of Forestry for the MoU with Shizuoka Prefecture.

The agreement focuses on a komodo breeding loan program for conservation. The Japanese government also appreciated Indonesia’s visit to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park.

The visit supported knowledge exchange on international standard park management. It also strengthened cooperation in conservation practices.

During the meeting, Japan invited Indonesia to join the Asia Protected Areas Partnership. The network focuses on protected areas and national parks across Asia. It currently involves 17 participating countries.

Meanwhile, Minister of Forestry, Raja Juli Antoni, expressed appreciation for Japan’s support and cooperation. He highlighted the close partnership in Indonesia’s forestry sector. The meeting formed part of President Prabowo Subianto’s state visit agenda.

The minister also proposed developing a Sister Park cooperation initiative. The program connects Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park with national parks in Indonesia. It aims to strengthen knowledge exchange and capacity building.

Indonesia also invited Japanese private sectors to invest in carbon projects. The investment includes afforestation and reforestation activities, including in national parks.

This follows Presidential Regulation Number 110 of 2025 on carbon economic value. Both countries reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening forestry cooperation.

They also promoted nature-based solutions to address climate change challenges. The meeting marked progress in Indonesia–Japan environmental partnership.
