RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The rupiah weakened in early trading in Jakarta on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, as investors adopted a cautious stance ahead of United States President Donald Trump’s State of the Union (SOTU) address.
The rupiah fell 19 points, or 0.11 percent, to IDR 16,848 per USD from its previous close of IDR 16,829 per USD.
Permata Bank chief economist Josua Pardede said sentiment toward the rupiah reflected investors’ caution ahead of Trump’s speech.
“Market participants are closely monitoring potential developments in US trade policy and further actions in the Middle East,” he said in Jakarta on Wednesday, as quoted by Antara.
Quoting Xinhua, Trump is scheduled to deliver his State of the Union address on Tuesday evening local time, which is expected to highlight his achievements since beginning his second term, amid declining approval ratings.
The address will mark Trump’s first formal State of the Union since returning to office.
In March 2025, he delivered a major speech before a joint session of Congress, but it was not officially designated as a State of the Union address because it took place shortly after he assumed office.
The highly anticipated address comes as the president’s approval ratings have declined in recent months. A recent poll shows that 32 percent of Americans say Trump has the right priorities, while 68 percent say he has not focused enough on the country’s most pressing issues.
“Increased caution supports demand for the US dollar, which has strengthened against most major currencies, including the rupiah,” Josua said.
Based on these factors, the rupiah is projected to trade in the range of IDR 16,775 to IDR 16,900 per USD. ***
