RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The rupiah strengthened at the opening of Jakarta trading on Monday, gaining 20 points or 0.12 percent to IDR 16,868 per U.S. dollar from IDR 16,888 previously. Analysts say the currency’s rise reflects both weak U.S. economic data and a landmark Supreme Court ruling that struck down President Donald Trump’s tariff policy.

“The rupiah has the potential to appreciate against the dollar, which fell sharply after disappointing growth figures and the Supreme Court’s decision to annul Trump’s tariffs,” said currency analyst Lukman Leong at Doo Financial Futures in Jakarta, Monday, February 23, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

According to Sputnik, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent described the ruling as a serious blow to the American people and a setback to Trump’s influence. On Friday, February 20, the Supreme Court voted 6–3 to declare that Trump lacked authority to impose global tariffs under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA).

Trump called the decision “very disappointing,” accusing the Court of being influenced by “foreign interests.” He stressed that national security tariffs remain in place, noting the ruling applied specifically to IEEPA-based measures.

“The real impact is still uncertain since Trump remains defiant, but at the very least this is a positive development for the global economy,” Lukman added.

The rupiah’s gains were also supported by U.S. growth figures that came in far below expectations. The American economy expanded just 1.4 percent, compared with forecasts of three percent. “The slowdown was largely due to the government shutdown and weakened consumer purchasing power caused by tariffs,” Lukman explained. ***
