Indonesia to Hold Further Trade Talks with U.S. After Supreme Court Ruling on Tariffs

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is preparing for further talks with the United States following a landmark Supreme Court ruling that struck down U.S. President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariff policy. The decision has prompted Jakarta to reaffirm its commitment to safeguarding national interests in future trade negotiations.
Indonesian Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs Spokesperson Haryo Limanseto, said Indonesia will continue to monitor developments closely. “There will be follow-up discussions between both sides regarding the decisions taken, and Indonesia will prioritize national interests and needs going forward,” he stated in Jakarta on Saturday, February 21, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
On Friday, February 20, the U.S. Supreme Court voted 6-3 to rule that Trump lacked authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) to impose global tariffs. Shortly after the ruling, however, Trump announced a new 10 percent “global import tariff".
Limanseto noted that the future of the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade (ART) between Indonesia and the U.S. remains contingent on decisions by both governments.
“The agreement still requires ratification in Indonesia, and the U.S. must undergo a similar process. With these latest developments, implementation is not yet in effect,” he explained.
Tariffs have been a cornerstone of Trump’s “America First” agenda, which he argues can revive manufacturing, create jobs, reduce national debt, and boost tax revenues. Supporters also believe the measures strengthen U.S. leverage in negotiating concessions with trade partners. ***
