RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves declined in early 2026 amid higher financing needs and monetary stabilization measures. Bank Indonesia (BI) reported that foreign exchange reserves fell to USD 154.6 billion at the end of January 2026.
The figure marked a decrease of USD 1.9 billion from the end-December 2025 level of USD 156.5 billion. Despite the decline, BI said the country’s foreign exchange reserves remained at a strong level.
BI Executive Director of Communications Ramdan Denny Prakoso said the movement was influenced by both domestic and global factors. “This development was influenced, among other things, by the government’s foreign debt payments and the rupiah exchange rate stabilization policy as Bank Indonesia’s response to increasing uncertainty in global financial markets,” Denny said in Jakarta on Friday, January 31, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Denny said Indonesia’s foreign exchange reserves remained sufficient to support external financing needs. “The foreign exchange reserve position at the end of January 2026 is equivalent to 6.3 months of imports, or 6.1 months of imports and government foreign debt payments, and is well above the international adequacy standard of around three months of imports,” he said.
Bank Indonesia assessed that the current reserve position was adequate to support external-sector resilience and maintain macroeconomic and financial-system stability amid rising global market pressures.
Looking ahead, BI expressed optimism that external-sector resilience would remain solid, supported by adequate foreign exchange reserves and continued foreign capital inflows, reflecting positive investor perceptions of Indonesia’s economic outlook and attractive investment returns.
“Bank Indonesia continues to strengthen coordination with the government to reinforce external resilience in order to maintain economic stability and support sustainable economic growth,” Denny concluded. ***
