RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government has announced plans to gradually cease gasoline imports between 2026 and 2027, aiming to reduce reliance on foreign fuel supplies.
Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said the policy is designed to ensure Indonesia no longer imports excessive amounts of fuel products.
Minister Bahlil explained that Pertamina’s Refinery Development Master Plan (RDMP) in Balikpapan, combined with the implementation of B40 biodiesel, has generated a national diesel surplus of about 1.4 million kiloliters. “Because we have a surplus of 1.4 million kiloliters, we will no longer import diesel fuel in 2026,” he said during a working meeting with the House of Representatives’ Commission XII at the Parliament Complex on Thursday, January 22, 2026.
He expressed confidence that Indonesia will stop importing diesel fuel by 2026, although C51 diesel will continue to be imported in the first half of the year while engine designs are finalized in the second half.
Turning to gasoline, Minister Bahlil said the government plans to phase out imports of RON 92, 95, and 98 gasoline by the end of 2027. “We will complete this by the end of 2027 so that we no longer import too many products,” he said.
The minister added that surplus diesel will be converted into raw material for national jet fuel production in 2027. “We are working hard with Pertamina to convert the 1.4 million kiloliters of surplus diesel into raw material for jet fuel,” he said.
By 2027, Minister Bahlil is optimistic that Indonesia will no longer import jet fuel, C51 diesel, or gasoline grades RON 92, 95, and 98. “We will only import RON 90 for subsidies. That will be the only fuel import,” he said.
On the same occasion, Commission XII Speaker Bambang Patijaya emphasized that the energy and mineral resources sector is a strategic pillar of the national economy. He said the sector plays a vital role in supporting economic growth, safeguarding energy security, and advancing sustainable development.
Bambang noted that 2025 will be a crucial year to review the Ministry’s achievements nationwide. “Commission XII observes that, in general, the implementation of the Ministry’s programs throughout 2025 has shown positive results,” he said. (Gusti Panji/Lasti Martina)
