KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia is reinforcing its position in the global halal supply chain by implementing halal certification, which will become mandatory nationwide in October 2026.

The policy is expected to boost consumer confidence, expand market access, and enhance the competitiveness of Indonesian products in both domestic and international markets.

Ahmad Haikal Hasan, Head of the Halal Product Assurance Agency (BPJPH), said halal certification serves as a state instrument to guarantee legal certainty and consumer protection. “Halal certification ensures consumer satisfaction by providing assurance of product compliance. It is not only a religious obligation but also a global quality standard,” Haikal said in Jakarta on Thursday, January 15, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

He emphasized that halal certification now represents cleanliness, health, safety, and product quality, making it a market necessity rather than merely a regulatory requirement. “Halal is customer satisfaction. It has become a competitive advantage and a driver of inclusive and sustainable economic growth,” he added.

Haikal noted that certification particularly benefits micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs), offering them added economic value and broader access to domestic and international markets.

The government’s Wajib Halal policy is mandated under Law No. 33/2014 on Halal Product Assurance and Government Regulation No. 42/2024.

Under this framework, businesses must ensure that food, beverages, medicines, cosmetics, chemical products, and consumer goods meet halal standards before entering the market.

The certification process involves meeting criteria for raw material sourcing, production facilities, hygiene standards, and supply chain transparency.

Further details on requirements and procedures for businesses and products under the 2026 Wajib Halal regulation are available on BPJPH’s official website, which provides guidance for companies preparing to meet the new standards. ***
