KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries is expanding the Red and White Fishermen Hamlets (Kampung Nelayan Merah Putih/KNMP) program in 2025, with 35 new locations set to be built to improve the welfare of coastal communities across Indonesia.

Head of the KNMP Development Implementation Coordination Team, Trian Yunanda, said the second phase of development will complement the 65 hamlets already under construction. “In total, there will be 100 locations funded by the 2025 State Budget,” Trian said in Jakarta on Saturday, December 20, 2025, as quoted by the ministry’s official website.

He explained that the second phase will be financed with IDR 859 billion (USD 51.4 million) under a multi-year contract scheme, with completion targeted for May 2026.

Trian stressed the importance of maintaining construction quality, aesthetics, and timeliness, while also involving local communities in the process. “Community involvement is crucial so that coastal residents can directly feel the economic impact,” he said, adding that participation fosters a sense of ownership of the facilities.

For 2026, the ministry is preparing a cluster-based KNMP concept, currently in the stage of surveying potential sites. Hundreds of surveyors have been deployed to ensure accurate data for accelerating the project.

“The cluster mechanism will integrate development into a single fisheries business model,” Trian said. He expressed hope that this approach would enhance the competitiveness of national fishery products in a sustainable way.

Regarding the 65 hamlets built in the first phase, construction progress is between 60 and 80 percent complete. “Hopefully, in January, construction will be completed so that the facilities can be enjoyed by the community immediately,” Trian said.

Minister of Marine Affairs and Fisheries Sakti Wahyu Trenggono previously emphasized that the KNMP is a driver of the coastal economy. He said the program not only provides infrastructure but also builds community competencies to achieve self-reliance and sustainability. ***
