  • The Decorated Boat Competition involved 20 groups representing villages and urban wards across Wangi-Wangi, Kaledupa, Tomia and Binongko islands.

RRI.CO.ID, Kendari - Wakatobi's waters came alive with a parade of 200 decorated boats during the Wakatobi Wonderful Festival and Expo (WAVE) 2026, showcasing the regency's maritime traditions while supporting tourism development.

Head of Bank Indonesia's Southeast Sulawesi Representative Office, Edwin Permadi, said the attraction was presented as a Decorated Boat Competition involving 20 participating groups representing villages and urban wards across Wakatobi Regency, from Wangi-Wangi Island to Binongko Island.

"This synergy is part of Bank Indonesia's commitment to encouraging the tourism sector to become increasingly innovative, digitally oriented, and adaptive," Edwin said when contacted in Kendari on Sunday, Oct. 4, 2026.

He said Bank Indonesia Southeast Sulawesi's involvement in the annual event, held on Wangi-Wangi Island from Oct. 2 to 4, 2026, aligned with the steady growth of Wakatobi's tourism sector.

WAVE 2026 was also included among the 125 events selected for the 2026 Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) program. "Besides the decorated boat parade, Bank Indonesia Southeast Sulawesi is contributing through two other areas of focus," he said, as quoted by Antara.

Edwin explained that the first focus is strengthening the digital transaction ecosystem through the use of the Quick Response Code Indonesian Standard (QRIS) and transaction security education, which were integrated into the Wakatobi Fun Run 5K and communal exercise activities.

"Second, as part of efforts to maintain price stability, Bank Indonesia Southeast Sulawesi is collaborating on the Affordable Food Movement, which provides staple commodities such as rice, shallots, chicken eggs, and cooking oil based on the Price Development Index compiled by the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS)," he said.

He emphasized that the collaboration would continue to be strengthened to make tourism a key driver of regional economic growth through the empowerment of micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), the expansion of digital transactions and sustained price stability. ***
