Gondrong Gunarto’s Artistic Journey: Indonesian Gamelan on the Global Stage

RRI.CO.ID, Surakarta – Musician and composer “Gondrong” Gunarto is known as an Indonesian artist who has consistently explored gamelan and traditional music through contemporary works. His artistic journey reflects a continuing effort to introduce Indonesia’s musical heritage through experimental and cross-genre approaches.

Born in Ngawi, East Java, Gondrong Gunarto grew up in a traditional arts family that introduced him to the richness of Javanese culture from an early age. This background later became one of the foundations of his creative journey as a musician seeking new possibilities in developing traditional music.

Gondrong’s musical journey began in the 1990s when he started exploring contemporary music through creative processes at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Surakarta. Since then, he has continued to develop experiments that bring together elements of traditional music with modern approaches.

These explorations have resulted in works that not only preserve the distinctive character of gamelan but also place it within a broader musical space. For Gondrong, music is a limitless space for exploration, allowing tradition to continue evolving and finding new forms in response to changing times.

His artistic experience has also taken Gondrong Gunarto to various international stages, including the World Gamelan Festival in Malaysia and the Sapporo Music Festival in Japan. He has also participated in performances and cultural collaborations in Europe and the United States, introducing Indonesian gamelan to international audiences.

His work has contributed to positioning Gondrong as an artist involved in Indonesia’s cultural diplomacy through performing arts. By combining tradition with experimentation, he demonstrates how music rooted in local culture can engage and collaborate with diverse forms of global musical expression.

This spirit aligns with Gondrong Gunarto’s role as Ambassador of the 2026 Solo International Performing Arts (SIPA), which carries the theme “Kinetic Kinship: Beyond Boundaries.” SIPA is part of the 2026 Karisma Event Nusantara (KEN) program, and Gondrong’s presence is expected to serve as a bridge between tradition and younger generations while strengthening efforts to introduce Indonesian arts and culture to the global stage.
