Indonesia Enhances Historical Scholarship Through New History Series

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia is strengthening efforts to develop a more comprehensive and updated account of its national history through the launch of the first five volumes of Indonesian History Book: National Dynamics in the Global Current. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon launched the books in Jakarta on Monday August 31, 2026, saying the series is expected to serve as a reference for future historical writing in Indonesia.

Fadli said the Ministry of Culture is facilitating historians in compiling the series while maintaining their academic independence and expertise. He emphasized that historians, particularly those from universities, are the most qualified to conduct and present historical research.

“So, we hope this can become one of the references for writing Indonesian history. Once again, I would like to emphasize that, in this case, the Ministry of Culture facilitates historians in writing history,” Fadli said.

He added that the books incorporate new findings, updated research, and the latest available data from various academic sources. The project brings together historians from different universities and fields of historical studies to provide broader perspectives on Indonesia's past.

The series involves 123 experts from various regions and academic backgrounds across Indonesia. Their contributions are intended to expand the scope of Indonesian historical scholarship while presenting the country's history from an Indonesia-centered perspective.

Fadli said the books seek to move beyond the traditional approach of treating history primarily as a collection of dates and events. Instead, the series examines Indonesia as an active subject in history and explores its interactions with wider regional and global developments.

The first five volumes cover topics ranging from the roots of Indonesia's archipelagic civilizations and cultural networks with India, China, and Persia to maritime trade, early interactions with the West, and the emergence of national consciousness. The complete series is planned to consist of 10 volumes, with the remaining volumes to be released after further editing, proofreading, photo acquisition, and layout work.

Fadli expressed hope that the publication would encourage further research and discussion among historians and the wider public. He said Indonesia's rich and complex history cannot be fully covered in a single series, making continued research essential to deepen understanding of the country's past and its relevance to the future.
