Wayang Krucil Preserves Kediri’s Living Cultural Treasure

RRI.CO.ID, Kediri - Wayang Krucil Gagrak Kediren preserves a distinctive traditional art form from Kediri, East Java. The East Java Culture and Tourism Office published the information on Thursday, August 27, 2026.

This traditional puppet art carries historical, philosophical, and life values that remain relevant today. Its distinctive forms and stories reflect the cultural identity developed within Kediri communities.

One of its dedicated preservation figures is puppeteer Ki Dalang Harjito, a third-generation artist. Through Padepokan Cipto Mudo Laras, he continues preserving and introducing traditional arts to younger generations.

Wayang Krucil Gagrak Kediren has distinctive musical accompaniment influenced by Kediri's regional cultural characteristics. Its puppets feature hollow middle sections and the distinctive gelung tekes, while its stories draw from Babad Panji and Babad Majapahit.

The performances have also developed stories about historical figures, including Prince Diponegoro and Trunojoyo. These narratives make Wayang Krucil more than entertainment, connecting performances with history and community values.

Its philosophy begins with the wooden material used to create the puppets, which represents kayun. The term refers to human will, which requires patience, discipline, spirituality, and self-control to develop positively.

The carving process symbolizes how human desires must also be shaped and directed. Through this philosophy, each carving mark reminds people that building a meaningful life requires an ongoing process.

Wayang is also viewed as a medium for mbabar, or explaining different aspects of human life. The puppeteer does more than perform characters, serving as an intermediary for delivering messages about goodness to society.

Wayang Krucil now faces challenges as younger generations develop increasingly diverse interests and entertainment choices. Performances are mainly held during community traditions, including Bersih Desa ceremonies and personal vows.

Ki Dalang Harjito continues promoting preservation through education, social media, and cooperation with the government. These efforts aim to keep Wayang Krucil alive as a cultural heritage that continues developing within society.
