RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The annual grand cultural show Pagelaran Sabang Merauke officially opened its 2026 edition, themed Hikayat Srikandi Nusantara (Tales of Nusantara’s Heroines), at the Indonesia Arena in the Gelora Bung Karno (GBK) complex, Central Jakarta, on Friday night, August 21, 2026.

Running through August 23, 2026, the production spotlights the pivotal role of women in Indonesian folklore and regional history as foundational pillars of civilization. The colossal performance brings together approximately 1,700 artists, including 387 dancers, 15 lead vocalists, a 60-piece orchestra, a 119-member choir, and musicians playing 50 traditional instruments across 103 distinct choreographies and 28 regional songs.

Key lineup performances feature Yura Yunita as Mahadewi, highlighted by a aerial sequence and a three-headed dragon prop, alongside Raisa as Srikandi, Christine Tambunan as Dayang Sumbi, Mirabeth Sonia as Mandeh Rubayah, and Pradnya Larasari as Calon Arang. Blending traditional textiles (wastra), music, and stagecraft, the event serves as a major national platform for cultural tourism.

Ministers and production leads emphasized that showcasing folklore through modern, large-scale theater keeps traditional heritage relevant for contemporary audiences while strengthening national identity.

Deputy Minister of Culture Giring Ganesha commended the theme for highlighting women's historic contribution to societal development.

"Women serve as the frontline in building civilization and safeguarding cultural values, through productions of this scale, our ancestral stories and regional heritage are presented not as obsolete history, but as a living, vibrant force that inspires future generations," Deputy Minister Giring said in Jakarta following the opening show on Friday, August 21, 2026, as quoted by Antara. ***
