RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's Ministry of Culture is stepping up efforts to preserve the nation's cultural heritage through the revitalization of museums, the designation of cultural heritage sites, and the development of cultural spaces across the country. The initiatives are part of the government's broader strategy to strengthen cultural advancement in a more integrated manner.

Minister of Culture Fadli Zon, announced the initiatives during a media discussion titled "Casual Talk with the Minister of Culture" in Jakarta on Wednesday, 5 August, 2026. He said the Ministry of Culture, which now operates as an independent institution, has been accelerating programs in line with Law No. 5 of 2017 on Cultural Advancement.

Fadli revealed that the number of National Cultural Heritage Sites has increased to 743. In addition, more than 600 other cultural heritage objects have been approved by the National Cultural Heritage Expert Team and are expected to be officially announced next week.

"We are pursuing every possible effort to accelerate cultural advancement, including the protection, development, utilization, promotion, and preservation of Indonesia's cultural heritage," Fadli said.

The ministry is also preparing several new museums, including a Film Museum in Jakarta's Old Town, a Photography Museum in Semarang, and a Music Museum in Bandung. Rather than constructing new buildings, the projects will make use of historic government-owned properties that have remained unused for years.

Fadli also highlighted growing public enthusiasm for museums through the Museum Passport initiative. He noted that around 20,000 Museum Passport books have been sold, reflecting increasing public interest in visiting museums.

Meanwhile, the government plans to revitalize nearly 200 museums, royal palaces, and cultural heritage sites across Indonesia. The program follows President Prabowo Subianto's directive to strengthen historical preservation as part of the country's long-term national development agenda.

Beyond preserving historical sites, the Ministry of Culture will expand educational programs through storytelling initiatives, strengthen museums as learning spaces, and promote Indonesia's history among younger generations. These efforts are expected to increase public appreciation of Indonesia's cultural wealth while introducing the country's heritage to a wider international audience.
