RRI.CO.ID, South Nias - Indonesia is stepping up efforts to secure UNESCO World Heritage status for Bawomataluo Village, a traditional settlement on Nias Island renowned for preserving one of the world's living megalithic cultures. Minister of Culture Fadli Zon reaffirmed the government's commitment during the opening of the Bawomataluo Expo IV 2026 in South Nias, North Sumatra, Monday, 27 July 2026 .

The cultural festival, themed "New Spirit, Enduring Heritage," is being held from July 28 to August 2 in Bawomataluo Village, Fanayama District. The event showcases the rich traditions of the Nias community while promoting the protection, development, and sustainable use of Indonesia's cultural heritage.

Fadli described Bawomataluo as an extraordinary example of a living heritage site, where megalithic traditions continue to be practiced by local communities. He said the village represents a unique cultural legacy that deserves greater international recognition.

"What exists here is truly unique. The living megalithic culture preserved to this day is an ancestral heritage that we must safeguard together," Fadli said. He added that the Ministry of Culture is committed to advancing Bawomataluo's nomination for UNESCO World Heritage status, although the process will require time and careful preparation.

According to the minister, preserving cultural heritage is not only a national responsibility but also a constitutional mandate under Article 32 of Indonesia's 1945 Constitution. He also expressed hope that the annual Bawomataluo Expo would continue to grow into a major cultural platform that empowers artists, cultural practitioners, and local communities.

Fadli said the festival has the potential to strengthen the local cultural economy by promoting traditional crafts, wood carving, music, performing arts, and other indigenous cultural expressions. He noted that it also serves as a space for nurturing the next generation of cultural practitioners and encouraging young people to appreciate Nias' rich traditions.

South Nias Regent Sokhiatulo Laia welcomed the ministry's support for the UNESCO nomination, saying international recognition would help preserve the region's cultural legacy while increasing its appeal as a cultural tourism destination. He expressed hope that collaboration between the central government, local authorities, and the community would accelerate efforts to achieve World Heritage status.

Bawomataluo is one of Indonesia's best-known traditional villages and has been designated a National Cultural Heritage site. Famous for its Omo Hada traditional houses, the iconic Fahombo stone-jumping tradition, and its living megalithic heritage, the village continues to preserve customs passed down through generations, making it one of Indonesia's most significant cultural destinations.
