RRI.CO.ID, Gowa - Indonesia is stepping up efforts to preserve one of South Sulawesi's most important historical landmarks by preparing a revitalization program for the Somba Opu Fortress Cultural Heritage Area. The initiative aims to strengthen heritage conservation while restoring the fortress as a vibrant center for cultural activities and community engagement.

Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, visited the Somba Opu Fortress Cultural Heritage Area in Gowa Regency, South Sulawesi, Sunday, 12 July 2026, as part of the government's commitment to protecting and revitalizing national heritage sites. The ministry hopes the revitalization will reinforce the fortress's role in preserving local history and cultural traditions.

Built in 1525 during the reign of the ninth King of Gowa, Karaeng Tumapa'risi' Kallonna, Somba Opu Fortress is one of the oldest and most significant historical sites in South Sulawesi. Today, the complex also serves as the province's cultural center, housing a museum, a cultural park, and traditional houses representing the diverse cultures of the Bugis, Makassar, Mandar, Toraja, and other ethnic communities.

“Somba Opu Fortress is an important landmark in the history of South Sulawesi. It holds tremendous historical and cultural value, and therefore must continue to be protected, preserved, and utilized for the benefit of the public,” Fadli said.

During the visit, the minister identified several priorities for the site's revitalization, including reconnecting approximately 500 meters of the damaged fortress wall, improving the landscape, cleaning the surrounding area, and maintaining the traditional houses within the complex. He said these efforts are essential to restoring the site's function as a dynamic cultural destination.

“We hope this area will once again become a vibrant cultural hub where people can organize festivals, visit museums, and enjoy a wide range of cultural activities. Achieving this will require collaboration among the central and regional governments, universities, cultural communities, businesses, philanthropic organizations, artists, and cultural practitioners,” he said.

The Ministry of Culture reaffirmed its commitment to supporting the development of cultural heritage sites through various programs, including funding from the Cultural Special Allocation Fund (DAK). The ministry also plans to prepare a comprehensive revitalization roadmap to guide the long-term restoration and management of the Somba Opu Fortress area.

Through stronger protection, preservation, and revitalization efforts, the government aims to ensure that Somba Opu Fortress remains a living cultural center that benefits local communities while safeguarding South Sulawesi's rich heritage. The initiative is also expected to strengthen the province's cultural identity and contribute to Indonesia's broader strategy of advancing culture as a foundation for sustainable national development.
