RRI.CO.ID, Lima Puluh Kota - Indonesia’s Ministry of Culture has inaugurated a new cultural center in West Sumatra aimed at preserving traditional arts, local customs, and community heritage. The facility is expected to serve as a hub for cultural education and creative activities rooted in Minangkabau traditions.

Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, officially inaugurated Balai Budaya Elidan during a visit to Rumah Sawiyah, a community center dedicated to cultural, social, and traditional activities in Harau District, Lima Puluh Kota Regency. The cultural hall forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen community-based cultural development across Indonesia.

Based on the release received by RRI VOI, Jakarta, Sunday, June 21, 2026, according to the ministry, the facility has already been used for a variety of local programs, including capacity-building activities for traditional leaders and women community figures, as well as other village-based initiatives. The center is designed to support the preservation and transmission of local knowledge and cultural practices.

Speaking at the inauguration, Fadli expressed his appreciation for the establishment of the facility and encouraged local communities to make full use of the space. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that cultural programs are managed sustainably and remain accessible to future generations.

“Balai Budaya Elidan still requires well-managed and sustainable programs. Activities such as randai traditional theatre, dance, oral traditions, drumming, poetry, theatre, martial arts, and other cultural expressions should be organized regularly through community-based initiatives,” Fadli said.

The minister reaffirmed his commitment to supporting arts and cultural activities throughout Indonesia. He noted that preserving cultural heritage is both a national responsibility and a collective effort involving local communities, cultural practitioners, and government institutions.

Local officials welcomed the inauguration, describing it as a significant investment in the cultural future of the region. West Sumatra Provincial Council member Nurcholis said the project demonstrates a strong commitment to preserving local heritage and supporting community development.

The Ministry of Culture plans to further enhance the facility by expanding its cultural infrastructure and programming. Part of the center will also be developed into a library featuring books and resources related to Minangkabau arts, culture, and traditional customs.

The officials hope the new cultural center will become a vibrant gathering place where local traditions can be practiced, studied, and passed on to younger generations. The initiative reflects Indonesia’s broader strategy of safeguarding cultural heritage through community participation and cultural education.
