RRI.CO.ID, Yogyakarta - Yogyakarta’s newest art fair initiative, Chapter Jogja, is set to return on June 19–23, 2026, at SD Tumbuh and the Jogja National Museum (JNM). Conceived as a Unique Art Fair, it builds on the legacy of the Jogja Art Fair (JAF) while reinterpreting its spirit for today’s art landscape.

Launched in 2025, Chapter Jogja has grown into more than a marketplace. It positions itself as a connector--linking artworks with audiences, galleries with communities, and the broader ecosystem that sustains artistic practice.

Unlike conventional art fairs, it does not compete with existing platforms but instead opens access to Yogyakarta’s long-standing art networks shaped by collectivity, education, and social capital.

Founder and Director Heri Pemad emphasized the living tradition of JNM as a site of creative circulation. “What is inherited here is not only institutional history, but the tradition of artists, students, communities, galleries, and the public meeting and building relationships across generations. Chapter Jogja wants to be part of that flow,” he explained.

The 2026 edition brings together diverse participants: Nadi Gallery (Jakarta), ArtSociates (Bandung), Artemis Art Gallery (Kuala Lumpur), and Le Gareca Art Gallery (Yogyakarta), alongside collectives such as Ruang MES 56, Krack! Printmaking Collective, and Versus Project (Yogyakarta).

Their presence reflects both international connections and grassroots independence, reinforcing Yogyakarta’s role as a hub of artistic experimentation.

Artistic Director Ignatia Nilu highlighted the fair’s broader vision. “If conventional economics speaks of goods exchange, art economics speaks of circulation of values. Art gains meaning through conversations, exposure, networks, legitimacy, and public engagement that evolve over time,” she said.

Chapter Jogja’s uniqueness lies in its equal landscape--where galleries, communities, academics, collectors, and the public meet on the same ground. Success is measured not only by sales but by the relationships, collaborations, and conversations that emerge.

By translating Yogyakarta’s traditions of collectivity into an art fair format, Chapter Jogja generates economic, social, symbolic, and intellectual value simultaneously. In doing so, it continues the legacy of JAF while shaping the future of Unique Art Fairs in Indonesia’s cultural capital. ***
