RRI.CO.ID, Singaraja - Balinese Hindus have commenced the sacred spiritual countdown to the major festival of Hari Raya Galungan by observing the twin purification rituals of Sugihan Jawa and Sugihan Bali, aimed at cleansing both the macrocosm and microcosm.
Occurring every 210 days under the Balinese Pawukon calendar, these consecutive holy days mark the first critical step toward preparing the physical and spiritual realms for Galungan, which celebrates the ultimate triumph of Dharma (righteousness) over Adharma (evil). Sugihan Jawa was observed on Thursday, June 11, 2026, while Sugihan Bali followed immediately on Friday, June 12, 2026.
"On the day of Sugihan Jawa, Hindus clean the environment, family shrines, temples, and other holy places. The goal is to cleanse all forms of dirt and negative energy that could disrupt the harmony of nature," Jro Mangku (priest) of Dadia Pasek Padang Subadra in Padangbulia Village, Buleleng, Nyoman Puger, explained on Thursday, June 11, 2026.
According to him, Sugihan Jawa comes from the word jaba, which means ‘outside.’ Therefore, the implementation of Sugihan Jawa is focused on the purification of Bhuana Agung, or the universe. During the ritual, devotees clean temples, family shrines, and residential areas to remove negative energies and restore harmony in nature.
Meanwhile, Sugihan Bali is dedicated to purifying the Bhuana Alit, or the microcosm, by cleansing the individual. Through rituals such as penglukatan (holy bathing) and prayers using tirta (holy water), devotees seek to purify their thoughts, words, and actions in preparation for Galungan.
To facilitate the macrocosmic cleansing during Sugihan Jawa, communities prepare specific ritual offerings (banten), which traditionally incorporate a roasted suckling pig during the community-wide ngrebuin purification ceremony.
"The meaning of the suckling pig as an offering medium in the ngrebuin ceremony is for the cleansing of the Bhuana Agung. It is a symbol of purifying the universe before the congregation enters the next holy sequence toward Galungan," Puger remarked.
Despite the widespread and vibrant continuity of these traditions across Bali's villages, the high priest noted that there is an urgent need to deepen the public's theological understanding of the rituals, rather than treating them merely as habitual seasonal routines.
"Our community's understanding of Sugihan Bali and Sugihan Jawa is still very minimal. Many carry out the tradition, but do not yet fully understand the spiritual essence and purpose of these two holy days," Puger observed candidly.
Ultimately, the successive execution of Sugihan Jawa and Sugihan Bali serves as a practical manifestation of Tri Hita Karana, the foundational Balinese philosophy of maintaining harmonious relationships between humanity and the Divine, humanity and fellow beings, and humanity and the natural environment.
