RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia marked the 101st anniversary of acclaimed writer, poet, and filmmaker Asrul Sani on Tuesday, 9 June 2026. The event highlighted his contributions to literature, cinema, and cultural thought.
Asrul Sani was a prominent member of Indonesia's Generation of '45 literary movement. He was widely recognized for helping shape modern Indonesian literature and national cinema.
The commemoration was held under the theme "A Century and One Year of Asrul Sani." It explored his intellectual legacy, creative works, and influence on Indonesian culture.
National Library of Indonesia Head, E. Aminudin Aziz, said the institution preserves many of Asrul Sani's works. The collection currently includes 80 items in various formats, including books, photographs, and audio archives.
He said the event reflects the library's commitment to promoting literacy and critical thinking. The institution also aims to make literary works and cultural heritage more accessible to the public.
Aminudin explained that literary classics should remain relevant to contemporary readers through adaptation and innovation. Several works have been transformed into formats such as comics and digital stories.
He said preserving literary heritage is closely connected to strengthening literacy development. Critical thinking skills remain an important goal of Indonesia's literacy efforts.
“National Library is committed to working together with ministries, institutions, and communities on literacy issues. When we talk about literacy, we are talking about developing critical thinking skills,” he said.
Meanwhile, Ministry of Culture Secretary General, Bambang Wibawarta, described Asrul Sani as a cultural figure whose legacy remains relevant today. The commemoration also featured an exhibition and cultural dialogues exploring his contributions to literature, film, and Indonesian culture.
