RRI.CO.ID, Semarang - Indonesia's Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon, called on the public to explore the nation's history through philatelic archives that document key moments in the country's past. The appeal was delivered during a public lecture held alongside a philatelic exhibition focusing on the Japanese occupation of Indonesia between 1942 and 1945.

The event, titled "Reading National History Through Philatelic Archives," took place at the historic Oudetrap Building in Semarang's Old Town district, on Saturday, 31 May 2026. It forms part of a broader effort to introduce philately not only as a hobby but also as a valuable source of historical and cultural documentation.

Fadli said stamps, letters, and postal documents provide insights into social, political, and cultural transformations that shaped Indonesia's development. He noted that such materials offer authentic historical evidence that can help the public better understand different periods of the nation's history.

“Through philatelic archives, we can observe the signs of different eras that recorded social, political, and cultural changes throughout the nation's journey. Stamps, letters, and postal documents are not merely collectibles but also sources of knowledge that help us read history more comprehensively,” he said.

The minister also highlighted the Japanese occupation as a significant and complex chapter in Indonesian history. While the period brought hardship and oppression, he said it was also part of broader global developments that eventually contributed to Indonesia's path toward independence.

“History is not always black and white. Today's generation needs to examine the dynamics of that period critically, based on facts and reliable historical sources,” he said.

The exhibition, titled "Under the Grip of the Older Brother: Traces of the Japanese Occupation in Indonesia Through Philatelic Archives (1942–1945)," showcases stamps, letters, postal records, and other historical materials from the wartime era. Organizers hope the exhibition will encourage visitors to view philatelic collections as historical records rather than simply collectible objects.

During the event, Fadli inaugurated the exhibition and signed commemorative covers alongside Semarang Mayor Agustina Wilujeng Pramestuti. He expressed hope that the exhibition and related discussions would help younger generations gain a deeper understanding of Indonesian history through archives and material culture preserved in philatelic collections.
