RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Traditional musical instruments in Indonesia reflect the nation’s rich cultural heritage and should continue to be preserved for future generations. There are various types of traditional instruments found across Indonesia, such as Polopalo from Gorontalo province.

This traditional percussion instrument is made from bamboo that is cut and shaped to resemble a tuning fork. Polopalo produces rhythmic sounds and is often played in traditional Gorontalo musical ensembles, especially during celebrations and traditional dances.

The instrument is played by striking it against a part of the body, specifically the knee. Over time, the instrument has been modified and improved to make it more refined.

One of the improvements includes the addition of a wooden beater coated with rubber to make it easier to play. With this method, the instrument can produce louder and clearer tones.

The sound patterns produced by this instrument are unique because they rely not only on striking techniques but also on the natural resonance of the bamboo. The traditional instrument Polopalo belongs to the idiophone category, a musical instrument that produces sound from the vibration of their own body.

In the past, this instrument was commonly played by farmers to scare away birds and was also used as a signaling device to inform people about certain events within the community. As time went by, Polopalo evolved into a musical instrument which creates harmonious rhythms.

Its existence is a unique part of Gorontalo’s musical art heritage. Polopalo not only enriches Indonesia’s traditional musical repertoire, but also serves as a symbol of cultural preservation and pride in local identity.
