RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - After a six‑year absence from the world’s most prestigious contemporary art exhibition, the Venice Biennale 2026 in Italy, Indonesia will return this year with its own national pavilion.

Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon announced the participation during his visit to the Art Jakarta Gardens exhibition in Senayan on Tuesday evening, May 5, 2026. “This year I also announce that Indonesia will return to the Venice Biennale 2026 with an Indonesian pavilion,” he said, as quoted by Antara.

The Indonesian Pavilion at the 61st Venice Biennale will carry the theme Printing the Unprinted, featuring works by seven leading artists, including the highly influential Agus Suwage, regarded as one of Indonesia’s foremost art figures.

The Ministry of Culture has appointed Aminuddin TH Siregar as curator, who jointly determined the location of the Indonesian pavilion at the Scuola Internazionale di Grafica.

The Venice Biennale 2026 will feature participants from 99 countries and is scheduled to run from May 9 to November 22, 2026.

Through this global platform, the ministry aims to elevate international exposure for Indonesian artists, expand networks within the global art ecosystem, and lay the groundwork for potentially hosting a large‑scale biennale in Indonesia in the future.

“We hope this builds networks and presents fine art as an essential cultural expression; Indonesia’s face among the world’s diverse cultural voices at the Venice Biennale,” Minister Fadli added. ***
