RRI.CO.ID. Denpasar - The sacred Day of Silence, known as Nyepi, is being positioned for global acclaim as the Bali Provincial Cultural Agency begins drafting a formal proposal for its inclusion in the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTb) list.

This strategic move aims to elevate the status of the Balinese tradition from a national treasure to a recognized world heritage, emphasizing its universal values of environmental stewardship and spiritual reflection. The initiative gained momentum following a collaborative meeting with cultural experts, traditional leaders, and the Bali Prajaniti Hindu Council.

"From yesterday's meeting, we will certainly create a submission proposal to the Ministry of Culture. Yes, we are drafting the application letter," said Head of the Bali Cultural Agency, Ida Bagus Alit Suryana, in Denpasar on Thursday, April 30, 2026.

The push follows Nyepi’s successful designation as an Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2023, which served as a foundational step toward international recognition.

Proponents of the bid argue that Nyepi transcends local ritual, offering a profound model for global sustainability. Cultural and religious figures emphasize that the practice of Amati Geni (refraining from fire and light) provides a unique moment for the earth to breathe, a concept increasingly respected by the international community.

"The meeting results agreed that the Holy Day of Nyepi be proposed as a world cultural heritage because it contains spiritual and social values for environmental preservation. The noble purpose of Nyepi is what underlies these figures in proposing the bid," remarked Bagus Alit, as quoted by Antara.

The local administration is now tasked with meticulous documentation to meet the rigorous standards set by UNESCO. While acknowledging the competitive nature of such submissions, provincial authorities remain committed to the quality of the application.

"We realize that surely from all over Indonesia there are submissions for cultural works to be established as world heritage. From those proposals, they will be reviewed again at the central level by the ministry," added Bagus Alit.

Currently, Nyepi remains the sole focus of Bali's UNESCO bid for this period. However, the Cultural Agency has indicated a willingness to consider other local traditions for future nominations should there be significant public support.

For now, the focus remains on securing a place for Nyepi alongside other Balinese icons like the Subak system, ensuring its philosophy of silence and balance is preserved for future generations worldwide. ***
