RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia has officially launched its candidacy for the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage for the 2026-2030 term. The announcement was made during the 224th UNESCO Executive Board Session in Paris on Thursday, marking a strategic push to elevate the nation’s influence in global cultural diplomacy.
Indonesian Minister of Culture Fadli Zon personally presented Indonesia’s vision under the theme Living Heritage, Shared Future to an audience of approximately 300 delegates and UNESCO secretariat members. The bid emphasizes Indonesia’s commitment to community-based preservation and the promotion of equitable international cooperation.
Antara reported in his presentation, Fadli underscored Indonesia's dedication to strengthening the protection of intangible cultural heritage while advocating for expanded international support for developing nations. As a centerpiece of its diplomatic overture, Indonesia showcased the Pendet dance and Gamelan music, both UNESCO-recognized heritages, to the international assembly.
A major pillar of the proposal is Indonesia's bid to host the Asia-Pacific Center for Community-Based Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage. Proposed as a UNESCO Category 2 Centre, the facility would be located in Indonesia and serve as a regional hub for capacity building, knowledge exchange, and multilateral cooperation.
The Indonesian delegation, which included Director General for Diplomacy, Promotion, and Cultural Cooperation Endah T.D. Retnoastuti and Head of Museums and Cultural Heritage Esti Nurjadin, viewed the session as a vital momentum to garner support from member states. ***
