RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - For some people, receiving a card from abroad may seem like a simple gesture. However, for radio listeners, a QSL card (derived from the Q-code meaning “I acknowledge receipt”) is tangible proof that the sound they hear has traveled thousands of kilometers, and to this day, Voice of Indonesia (VOI) continues to send them.
In international broadcasting, QSL cards have long been recognized as official confirmations of reception reports submitted by listeners. This practice plays an important role in the radio ecosystem, particularly in shortwave broadcasting, which reaches audiences across borders. According to the International Telecommunication Union, cross-border radio communication serves a strategic role in global information exchange and helps strengthen relations between nations through broadcasting.
For radio enthusiasts, especially within the DXers community (long-distance radio listeners), QSL cards are more than just simple confirmations. They symbolize the connection between broadcasters and listeners and often become valuable collectibles that reflect a listener’s journey of exploring broadcasts from around the world.
This tradition is also recognized by UNESCO as part of communication culture that fosters information exchange and cross-cultural understanding. Today, Voice of Indonesia continues to uphold this tradition by issuing QSL cards in two formats: physical cards sent via postal services and digital versions, known as E-QSL, delivered through email.
Receiving a physical QSL card offers a unique experience for listeners. It brings the excitement of receiving international mail, often featuring distinctive designs that reflect Indonesia’s cultural identity.
From a communication perspective, such tangible interactions are considered to create stronger emotional connections compared to purely digital exchanges, as they involve personal and physical engagement.
On the other hand, the introduction of E-QSL represents an adaptation to technological advancements. Digital formats allow faster, more efficient, and environmentally friendly processes. This aligns with broader global media trends, where broadcasting institutions are expected to remain relevant without losing their identity.
VOI’s approach reflects a balance between preserving tradition and embracing innovation. By continuing to send QSL cards, VOI not only maintains a long-standing broadcasting heritage but also strengthens emotional connections with its listeners worldwide.
