RRI.CO.ID, Samarinda – The inauguration of the Kapakat Isen Mulang (KIM) East Kalimantan board for the 2026–2031 term was more than an organizational ceremony; it became a rallying point for strengthening Dayak cultural preservation. This emphasis was echoed in speeches throughout the event.

KIM is a Dayak cultural and social organization that serves as both a community association and a partner in regional development, while also acting as a guardian of Dayak identity and traditions.

Chairman of the East Kalimantan Dayak Customary Council (DAD), Viktor Yuan, underscored the importance of safeguarding cultural identity amid modernization. He stressed that the diversity of Dayak sub-tribes must be nurtured as part of Indonesia’s cultural wealth.

“Preserving customs is vital because they define our identity. One way is through the rumah betang as a cultural learning space,” Viktor said on Saturday, April 11, 2026. He noted that such spaces could serve as hubs for traditional activities like dance and karungut performances.

Viktor also highlighted the strategic role of youth in ensuring cultural continuity. Without their involvement, he warned, traditional values risk being eroded by the passage of time.

Samarinda Mayor Andi Harun reinforced that KIM is not just another organization but a guardian of values and a bastion of local wisdom. “Kapakat Isen Mulang is a noble philosophy that must be protected and upheld,” Andi said, adding that the organization plays a crucial role in balancing tradition with modernity.

Newly elected KIM Chairman Firminus Mayon pledged to advance cultural preservation programs and called on members to actively safeguard ancestral heritage. He emphasized that the inauguration marked the beginning of a collective commitment to keep Dayak culture alive within East Kalimantan’s multicultural society. (Annaila Azzahra/Sri Wahyuni)
