RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Indonesian government, through the Ministry of Creative Economy, is encouraging the development of jazz music as a driver of a sustainable creative economy ecosystem. Despite its relatively exclusive segment, jazz is considered to have a loyal fan base and strong business potential.
This emerged during an audience between Vice Minister of Creative Economy, Irene Umar, musician Berry Likumahuwa, and film creator Jeremy Teja Sanger, in Jakarta.
In a press release received by RRI VOI from the Ministry of Creative Economy on Wednesday, April 8, 2026, Irene, emphasized the importance of designing a jazz performance that is not only artistically strong but also business-oriented. She encouraged thorough preparation of every element of the event, from talent curation and collaboration concepts to post-event.
"We must view this as an ecosystem. Jazz performances don't stand alone, but can connect with other sub-sectors such as culinary, fashion, and even the hospitality industry. This collaboration not only enriches the audience experience but also opens up new, sustainable economic opportunities for industry players," Irene Umar conveyed.
The Ministry of Creative Economy, which oversees 17 sub-sectors, views cross-sub-sector collaboration as key to building a healthy ecosystem. Music, as a strategic sub-sector, has significant potential for growth if it can synergize with other aligned sectors.
The performance initiative initiated by Berry Likumahuwa and Jeremy Teja Sanger is a concrete example of this collaboration. The concept developed not only presents a jazz concert but also packages it in the form of a documentary film and involves young talent from various regions in Indonesia.
He said the audience provided a new perspective in developing a broader and more integrated performance concept. Meanwhile, Jeremy Teja Sanger assessed the government's support and involvement as a positive signal for creative industry players to continue innovating.
The collaboration between music and film that is currently being designed is expected to not only be a creative work, but also become a model for the development of a sustainable ecosystem.
