Reog Balloon Carnival Lights Up Ponorogo Skies in Safe Display of Tradition

RRI.CO.ID, Ponorogo - The skies over Ponorogo, East Java, were filled with vibrant colors on Sunday, March 29, 2026, as the local Police (Polres Ponorogo) and the Regency Administration hosted the Reog Balloon Carnival (RBC) 2026. The event was specifically designed to provide a safe and controlled outlet for the region's traditional hot air balloon hobby, which has historically faced safety challenges.

Centering the festivities at the motocross circuit in Jenangan District, the carnival drew thousands of spectators who gathered early in the morning to witness dozens of massive, creatively designed balloons take flight.

Ponorogo Police Chief Police Adjunct Police Commissioner Andin Wisnu Sudibyo explained that the festival is a strategic move to reduce illegal balloon launches that often pose risks to residential areas and power grids.

"We are holding this festival to accommodate the community's hobby of flying hot air balloons in a safe and controlled manner," he said, as quoted by Antara.

Unlike illegal launches, every balloon in the carnival was tethered with ropes, ensuring they remained under control and did not drift into dangerous flight paths.

Beyond safety, the 44 participants were judged on their design creativity and the uniqueness of their balloon shapes. The success of this year's event has sparked plans to elevate the carnival into a larger national-level attraction.

Acting Regent of Ponorogo, Lisdyarita, praised the initiative for transforming a potentially hazardous tradition into a positive tourism asset. "We will schedule this event annually as an effort to suppress wild balloons while also becoming a tourist attraction," she noted.

The Reog Balloon Carnival (RBC) 2026 was defined by several key highlights that showcased a successful blend of tradition and modern safety standards.

A primary focus of the event was safety first, as all balloons were strictly tethered to the ground with ropes to prevent them from interfering with aircraft flight paths or falling onto dangerous power lines. This controlled environment encouraged massive community engagement, with 44 different groups from across Ponorogo participating to showcase their diverse local artistry through unique balloon designs and vibrant colors.
