RRI.CO.ID, East Aceh - In the village of Sijudo, East Aceh regency, residents recovering from recent floods are finding strength in community by upholding the centuries-old meugang tradition, preparing and sharing meat together ahead of Eid al-Fitr.

“Through meugang tradition, everyone works hand in hand, from slaughtering livestock to cooking and eating together. It strengthens our sense of family,” said head of Rantau Panjang hamlet, Rubek Jahidin, on Friday, March 20, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Despite ongoing struggles to rebuild their lives after the disaster, villagers remain committed to preserving the ritual. Men take charge of slaughtering and cutting beef, while women prepare spices and cook the dishes. Once ready, the meals are shared with all 46 households in the hamlet, with part of the meat distributed and the rest enjoyed communally.

The practice, deeply rooted in Acehnese culture, is more than just a festive meal, it is a symbol of solidarity. Jahidin noted that the tradition helps residents maintain bonds of brotherhood, which in turn becomes a source of resilience in facing hardship.

Although government and private aid have reached the community, villagers continue to work toward normalizing daily life. “Through meugang, we gather to preserve ties of kinship, welcome Eid, and prepare for the future together,” Jahidin concluded.

For the people of Sijudo, the meugang feast is not only about food but also about reaffirming unity, ensuring that even amid recovery, the spirit of togetherness remains intact. ***
