RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – The Betawi tradition of andilan has been revived ahead of Eid al-Fitr as a symbol of communal unity and mutual cooperation. Andilan is a collective and collaborative practice among the Betawi people to provide buffalo meat for shared enjoyment during the Lebaran festivities.

"The term andilan is derived from the word andil, meaning a share or contribution. The results of the collective pool are distributed evenly based on each resident's contribution, ensuring that everyone benefits," said the General Chairperson of Betawi Youth, Masykur Isnan, on Wednesday, March 18, 2026.

This practice represents a collective effort that emphasizes the values of togetherness and social justice. The buffalo andilan also functions as a social glue, particularly within the Jakarta region.

The tradition reflects local wisdom that has grown from the community and continues to be preserved today. Similar practices are still observed in several other regions, though in some cases, the frequency of these events has begun to decline.

"In East Jakarta, the andilan tradition remains vibrant with the support of various stakeholders, including the regional administration. In this year's implementation, more than five buffalo were provided as part of the initiative," he added.

Andilan tradition is a specific Betawi (local residents of Jakarta) custom to welcome Eid al-Fitr. The tradition involves residents, ranging from 10 to 30 people or an entire neighborhood, pooling their funds to purchase a buffalo.

"The meat from the slaughter is distributed to participating residents to be processed into stew. This culinary dish is a signature Eid delicacy for the Betawi community," remarked the Acting Head of the Jakarta Provincial Culture Agency, Mochammad Miftahullah Tamary. (Annaila Azzahra/Bambang MBKA)
