RRI.CO.ID, Temanggung - Reog artists in Temanggung Regency, Central Java, organized a unique event titled "Tadarus Budaya" (Cultural Tadarus) at the Pendopo Pengayoman courtyard on Saturday night, March 14, 2026. The gathering served as a dual effort to preserve traditional arts and strengthen the bonds of brotherhood among local performers during the month of Ramadan.
Ganjul, a senior figure among Temanggung's reog artists, noted that while the regency is home to approximately 19 reog groups, 13 participated in this specific showcase, which took place following the Tarawih prayers.
The name "Tadarus Budaya" was chosen as a symbolic gesture of the artists' commitment to cultural continuity. Drawing a parallel to the religious practice of tadarus (reading the Quran) during Ramadan, Ganjul explained that for the artists, performing is a form of "reading" their heritage and expressing gratitude to God.
“In Temanggung Regency, there are already 19 reog groups, but tonight about 13 groups are present. This activity aims to manifest our love as Javanese people to maintain and preserve culture),” he said, as quoted by Antara.
Although Reog originated in Ponorogo, East Java, the art form has flourished across various regions, including Temanggung. The event provided a vital space for different groups to interact, share experiences, and foster a collective spirit to keep the tradition alive.
The cultural gathering also attracted attention beyond regency borders, with artists from neighboring Semarang and Magelang traveling to Temanggung to participate and show their support.
The participants emphasized that the event highlights how religious values and cultural traditions can coexist harmoniously in society. By integrating these two pillars, the artists hope to uphold the dignity and progress of Temanggung.
“Culture must not go extinct and in religion, we must not be careless. Both must walk hand-in-hand to maintain the dignity and progress of Temanggung,” Ganjul concluded. ***
