KBRN, Jakarta: In a bid to preserve its fading cultural legacy, Jakarta has proposed ten traditional Betawi expressions for recognition as Indonesia’s Intangible Cultural Heritage (WBTb) in 2025.
The move reflects growing concern over the survival of local traditions in the face of rapid urbanization and shifting generational interests.
The proposed cultural works encompass a range of culinary, musical, and ceremonial practices deeply rooted in Betawi heritage, a unique blend of Malay, Chinese, Arab, and European influences that has shaped Jakarta’s identity for centuries.
Among the submissions are Tehyan crafting techniques, a traditional string instrument made from coconut shell and horsehair, and beloved dishes like Geplak, Timus, and Putu Mayang, which are staples of Betawi festive cuisine.
Also included are Bekakak Ayam, a symbolic roasted chicken dish used in traditional wedding rituals, and Rebana Ketimpring, a small tambourine central to Islamic musical performances.
Other entries, such as Buleng, Jampe, Mangkeng, and the lively Tari Enjot-Enjotan dance, reflect the community’s spiritual and celebratory expressions.
“These traditions are still practiced but increasingly vulnerable,” said Linda Enriany, Head of Cultural Protection at Jakarta’s Culture Agency, as reported by antaranews.com. “By proposing them for WBTb status, we aim to protect and revitalize them before they disappear.”
The recommendations were presented during the Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage Determination Session held in Jakarta from October 5 to 10, 2025.
The session, organized by the Ministry of Culture’s Directorate General of Cultural Protection and Tradition, brought together experts to evaluate heritage nominations from across the archipelago.
For Jakarta, the proposal is more than a formality, it’s a cultural lifeline.
The city’s Betawi traditions, often overshadowed by modern development, continue to survive in pockets of community life. Official recognition would not only validate their importance but also provide a framework for education, promotion, and sustainable preservation.
“This designation will allow us to develop and utilize these cultural assets more widely,” Linda added, emphasizing the need for institutional support and public engagement. ***
