KBRN, Jakarta: Egrang, a classic Indonesian folk game, is a unique and exhilarating activity. While it may appear simple, mastering it requires exceptional skill in maintaining balance, along with speed and precision to succeed.

Recognized as an official recreational sport in Indonesia, Egrang is more than just a pastime. It’s a test of physical coordination and mental resilience.

Interestingly, similar games exist outside Indonesia. In France, a version known as Tchangues features three legs: two strapped to the player’s feet and a third used for support during rest.

Historically, shepherds in the swampy and treacherous Landes region of southwestern France used Tchangues to monitor their livestock from an elevated vantage point.

According to kebudayaan.kemdikbud.go.id, playing Egrang demands strong determination. Participants must remain confident and balanced to avoid falling. The game instills values of sportsmanship and perseverance, while also offering physical benefits such as improved stamina and strength.

Beyond its physical challenges, Egrang teaches players to be hardworking, courageous, diligent, and patient—qualities deeply rooted in Indonesian cultural values.

Across the archipelago, Egrang is known by different names. In Kalimantan, it’s called Batungkau; in Central Java, Jangkungan; in Bengkulu, Ingkau; and in West Sumatra, it’s popularly referred to as Tengkak-tengkak. ***
