KBRN, Sibolga: The Toba Batak tribe is one of six Batak subethnic groups originating from North Sumatra. They possess a rich and unique culture, encompassing a clan system, language, customs, arts, and beliefs.

According to Sahidun Simatupang, a Batak customary elder in Tapanuli Tengah (Tapteng) Regency, during the "Budaya Negeri Pro1 RRI Sibolga" program on Monday June 30, 2025, several important aspects of the Toba Batak ethnicity and culture include:

- Clan System: The patrilineal kinship system (tracing lineage through the father) is highly significant in Toba Batak society. Every individual inherits a clan name from their father, and this clan forms the basis of their identity and social relationships within the community.

- Language: Toba Batak is the local language used for daily communication by the Toba Batak people. This language belongs to the Austronesian language family.

- Customs and Traditions: Toba Batak greatly upholds customs passed down through generations, such as mangulosi (the ritual of draping ulos cloth), mangongkal holi (reburial ceremony), wedding ceremonies, and death ceremonies, including Saur Matua (for those who pass away after marrying off all their children and having grandchildren) and Sari Matua (for those who pass away after having grandchildren from their children).

- Arts: These include the Tortor dance, Gondang music, and Ulos fabric.

- Belief System: Before the arrival of major religions, the Toba Batak people had an indigenous belief system called Parmalim. This belief worships Mulajadi Nabolon as the supreme deity and also acknowledges the existence of ancestral spirits and benevolent as well as malevolent spirits.

- Traditional House: The Toba Batak traditional house, known as Rumah Bolon, features a unique architectural characteristic with a curved roof and distinctive carvings.

- Local Wisdom: This includes principles like Dalihan Natolu (the three pillars of kinship) and Marsiadapari or Gotong Royong (mutual cooperation). ***
