KBRN, Makassar: Ma'gasing also known as Akgasing in Makassarese is a traditional folk game involving the competitive spinning of a wooden top using a specialized rope. This game is documented in the book “Folk Games of the Makassar Bugis Tribe in South Sulawesi” and holds significant cultural importance within Bugis society.
Bugis culturist Anddi Oddang Pero explained that Ma'gasing is a game that cultivates mentality, balance, and patience in Bugis children. Traditionally played after the harvest or during the dry season, Maggasing signifies a period of relaxation and fosters friendship between villages.
“Children and teenagers will gather in the field to show off their skills,” said Andi Odang as quoted by rri.co.id on Monday, May 5, 2025.
Andi Odang also explained that the spinning top is more than just a traditional game. It instills values of togetherness and cohesiveness and serves as a foundation for strong childhood friendships that remain in a child's memory.
"Gasing made from teak or guava wood is carefully prepared by local craftsmen. The best players know that it's not just throwing power that matters, but rhythm and technique," he continued.
Although believed to have originated in Sumatra, the spinning top has long been a vibrant part of Bugis culture and is integrated into folk festivities. Its rule is simple: the player who maintains the longest spin achieves victory.
In our modern era, the vibrant tradition of Maggasing has begun to fade, often overshadowed by the allure of gadgets and digital games. Yet, in some villages, the distinctive whir of its spinning top still echoes, offering children valuable lessons in self-control and healthy competition. ***
