KBRN, Sleman: Indonesia's younger generation is actively bringing the kebaya, a once-marginalized traditional dress, back into the spotlight by redefining it as a modern, stylish symbol relevant to today's fashion trends.
This positive trend revives cultural heritage, showing that tradition can adapt and thrive in the modern era.
Kebaya is a traditional blouse-dress combination, typically made from sheer fabrics such as silk, cotton, or voile, and often adorned with intricate embroidery or lace. It is usually paired with a sarong, batik, or other traditional skirt.
Historically, kebaya was worn by women in royal courts or aristocratic circles, but it has since evolved into a symbol of national and cultural identity, particularly in Indonesia, often worn during formal occasions, cultural events, or even modern reinterpretations for daily wear.
In Yogyakarta, a boutique named Kebaya Oma has successfully captured the attention of young people with its unique collection of vintage kebaya.
The boutique offers a wide selection of kebaya, jewelry, accessories, shawls, bags, 'kain lilit' (wrapping cloth), batik, bustiers, and other clothing that attracts young people with its vintage atmosphere and diverse designs, making it worth visiting for those seeking unique, timeless fashion pieces.

Its strategic location on Jalan Monumen Jogja Kembali, Gemawang Village, Mlati Subdistrict, Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Province, makes the store easy to find.
"We provide a variety of vintage kebaya types such as Kebaya Kutu Baru, Kebaya Encim (Peranakan), Kebaya Kartini, Kebaya Janggan, and Kebaya Bali. We also offer fabrics, Obi sashes, brooches, and various kebaya accessories," said Vera Orchidlia, the store owner, recently.
Apart from selling kebaya products of exclusive designs, the store also offers kebaya rental services. Customers are free to adjust to their respective needs.

The prices offered range, depending on the type. Non-Kebaya Encim products are priced from IDR 100,000 (USD 6.10) to IDR 150,000, while vintage kebaya encim products of the 60s-70s style start from IDR. 500,000, Vera said.
The store's interior decoration, furniture selection, and item arrangement create a charming classic atmosphere. Every corner of the store exudes a strong vintage charm. Visitors can enjoy a different ambiance from typical kebaya stores.

A unique destination for kebaya and antiques enthusiasts, this store first opened in 2016. It offers a collection of vintage and contemporary kebaya items as well as Oma Gallery, filled with antique and vintage items.
"After gathering a large collection of items, we conceived the idea of creating a gallery, which includes Kebaya Oma," said Vera.
The name Kebaya Oma originated from a noble vision to assist elderly individuals. The store's founder was concerned about elderly women facing financial difficulties, as many of them were reluctant to ask their children for help.
These elderly women chose to sell their unused items, including kebaya. Kebaya Oma then became a platform for them to earn additional income. Initially, Kebaya Oma was a social initiative aimed at helping the elderly.
"Currently, only some of the kebaya come from elderly women, as we also produce new kebaya. We even employ seamstresses aged 69 to 78. Therefore, we strive to empower the Yogyakarta community, focusing on assisting older individuals to improve their financial well-being," Vera explained."
The Oma Gallery itself pampers visitors with a wide selection of antiques, ranging from elegant classic furniture to rare vintage trinkets. Visitors can find kebaya in various styles, from old ones rich in history to modern and trendy contemporary items."

"I founded Kebaya Oma because I am interested in vintage items, especially kebaya. Moreover, as a young generation, we must preserve our culture, especially the 'kutu baru' kebaya which is an Indonesian heritage, so we need to preserve it," said Vera.
"'Kutu baru' kebaya is both unique and captivating to wear. Traditionally, it was a staple outfit for mothers in the past. However, for the younger generation, kebaya no longer needs to be paired exclusively with traditional cloth. It can equally complement pants, skirts, or any attire that suits their personal style," she explained.
Vera revealed that 'kutu baru' kebaya and 'janggan' kebaya are now the favorites among the younger generation. They become the store's best-selling items not only domestically but also internationally, thanks to their classic designs that remains relevant to current trends.
Kebaya Oma has shipped its products to a number of countries including Spain, Germany, and Brazil. Malaysia stands out as the most frequent destination, highlighting the international community's enthusiasm for Indonesia's cultural heritage.
"I hope the younger generation will cherish the kebaya as a symbol of national identity. While there was a period when the kebaya fell out of everyday fashion, I am grateful that it has seen a revival in recent years," Vera remarked.
Following its success on Jalan Monjali's outlet, in 2024 Kebaya Oma has opened a new branch strategically located in the heart of Yogyakarta, at Jalan Cokrodipuran No. 6, Ngupasan Village, Gondomanan Subdistrict. The store and the gallery are ready to welcome customers daily from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. local time. ***
