KBRN, Palembang: Kemaro Island in Palembang, South Sumatra, once again became the center of Chinese cultural celebrations with the Cap Go Meh ritual. This tradition, which honors ancestors, takes place 15 days after the Lunar New Year.

This year, the peak of the Cap Go Meh celebration fell on Monday and Tuesday, February 11-12, 2025, attracting thousands of visitors from various regions.

The island, located in the middle of the Musi River, was illuminated by lanterns adorning every corner, creating a sacred and festive atmosphere.

Mini, a first-time attendee of the Cap Go Meh festival, was amused by the atmosphere on Pulau Kemaro.

"I am truly astonished by the number of Chinese community members who come to pray and offer tributes to their ancestors. The atmosphere is very solemn," she said on Sunday, February 9, 2025, as quoted by rri.co.id.

She was also captivated by the grandeur of the multi-tiered pagoda adorned with twin dragons, a distinctive icon of Pulau Kemaro. In addition to the prayer rituals, Cap Go Meh was enlivened by various cultural attractions.

Visitors enjoyed dynamic lion dance (barongsai) and wushu performances, adding to the vibrancy of the celebration.

A variety of traditional culinary delights, such as bakpao, fried kwetiau, and kue keranjang (nian gao), sold by local small businesses (MSMEs), also attracted visitors eager to savor the special flavors of the Lunar New Year.

Pulau Kemaro also holds legendary tales that captivate tourists.

Elders attending the event often share stories about the island's history, including the love legend of Tan Bun An and Siti Fatimah, which is part of Palembang's rich cultural heritage.

"I just found out about the love story behind Pulau Kemaro. It makes me even more curious to return next year," said one enthusiastic visitor.

In addition to being a spiritual and cultural center, the Capgomeh celebration has a positive economic impact on the surrounding community. Numerous vendors sell unique souvenirs, such as lion-head dragon toys, lucky cat figurines, and lantern decorations, which attract visitors' attention.

The presence of small businesses around the location adds to the festivity and helps boost the local economy.

With an atmosphere filled with lantern lights, the distinct scent of incense, and high community enthusiasm, Cap Go Meh on Kemaro Island is not just a celebration but a true manifestation of cultural preservation and harmony among Palembang residents.

It is a spectacle for the Chinese community and anyone who wants to experience the magic of a tradition that has endured for hundreds of years in the city. ***
