Fire Hits Lombok’s Mount Rinjani Peak Outside Main Hiking Trails

RRI.CO.ID, Mataram - A joint team from the Mount Rinjani National Park Center (TNGR) was deployed early Wednesday morning, September 23, 2026, to extinguish a land fire at Setampol Peak in the Torean Resort area of Mount Rinjani, Lombok Island, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).

After being temporarily held back by dense nighttime conditions and extreme terrain, crews are now focusing on extinguishing the blaze while assessing the level of ecosystem damage and the extent of vegetation consumed by the fire.

Head of the Administrative Subdivision at the Mount Rinjani National Park Center NTB, Astekita Ardi, said the forest and land fire incident at Setampol Peak, Torean Resort, occurred on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at 6:50 p.m. local time.

“The fire location is outside the Mount Rinjani hiking trail,” he said in Mataram on Wednesday, September 23, 2026.

Following the report, the TNGR prepared an initial firefighting team to carry out early suppression efforts and assess the fire’s intensity and affected area at the incident location. “Considering personnel safety factors and the fact that the incident occurred at night, the team’s departure was carried out today (Wednesday),” said Ardi, as quoted by Antara.

He added that, as of this initial information, data on the burned area, fire cause, affected vegetation conditions, and response progress remain under assessment by field crews. The TNGR continues to monitor and coordinate on handling the fire at Setampol Peak. Further updates will be provided based on monitoring results and reports from field personnel.

“Crews are currently carrying out firefighting efforts,” he said.

Ardi also urged the public and visitors to jointly preserve the environmental sustainability of the Mount Rinjani area in Lombok. “Current weather conditions have entered the dry season. We urge hikers not to discard cigarette butts carelessly or burn waste, which could trigger land fires,” he concluded. ***
