RRI.CO.ID, Pekanbaru - The Riau Provincial Administration launched the Green For Riau Initiative during a high-level meeting in Pekanbaru on Monday, September 7, 2026, aimed at bridging low-emission development with local economic growth while addressing a major climate financing gap.
Riau faces an estimated IDR 11.4 trillion (USD 728 million) funding deficit to achieve its regional targets under Indonesia's Forestry and Other Land Uses (FOLU) Net Sink 2030 agenda. Provincial authorities emphasized that climate finance mechanisms are no longer optional, but essential to conserving Riau's strategic tropical forests, vast peatland ecosystems, mangroves, and rich biodiversity without compromising local welfare.
Regional planning strategy combines ecosystem protection with economic returns using instruments such as jurisdictional REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). National forestry advisors highlighted Riau's critical role in meeting Indonesia's national carbon reduction targets, stressing that sustainable land-use governance must deliver tangible financial benefits directly to grassroots communities.
Provincial leadership and forestry ministry advisors affirmed that sustainable environmental governance and regional economic growth must proceed in tandem through cross-sector collaboration.
"Riau does not have to choose between economic growth and environmental protection, both must proceed together in realizing resilient, inclusive, low-emission, and sustainable development, the funding gap to support the FOLU Net Sink 2030 agenda in Riau still reaches around Rp 11.4 trillion. Therefore, climate finance is an essential part of our development strategy so environmental protection moves hand-in-hand with economic empowerment," Riau Provincial Secretary Syahrial Abdi said in Pekanbaru on Monday, September 7, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.
Ministry of Forestry Expert Staff for Climate Change Haruni Krisnawati underscored Riau's strategic position in national climate action.
"Riau holds a strategic position in Indonesia's forestry and climate change agenda due to its landscapes covering tropical forests, peatland ecosystems, and mangroves, jurisdictional REDD+ serves as an effective instrument to drive emission reductions while ensuring local communities reap direct benefits from sustainable natural resource management," Haruni Krisnawati noted. ***
