RRI.CO.ID, Medan - The North Sumatra Provincial Administration presented its premier tourism destinations, historical landmarks, and culinary heritage to diplomatic delegations from Malaysia and Thailand upon their arrival at Kualanamu International Airport in Deli Serdang.
The international delegates arrived on Monday, September 7, 2026, to attend the 32nd Indonesia-Malaysia-Thailand Growth Triangle (IMT-GT) Ministerial Meeting and Related Meetings, taking place in Medan from September 7 to 10. Senior provincial officials welcomed the delegations in the airport's VIP Lounge with performances showcasing traditional North Sumatran attire and local delicacies, including traditional cakes such as wajik, lemper, pudding, and guava.
Provincial administrators and foreign delegation leaders emphasized that sub-regional diplomatic forums serve as key opportunities to strengthen cultural ties, economic collaboration, and regional tourism networks.
"For city tours within Medan, delegates can visit Maimun Palace, Tjong A Fie Mansion, the Great Mosque, and the Rahmadsyah Museum, or enjoy the atmosphere of the old city district in Kesawan," North Sumatra Assistant for Administration and People's Welfare Basarin Yunus Tanjung Yunus said at Kualanamu Airport on Monday, September 7, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He highlighted the historical significance of Tjong A Fie in building Medan's multicultural identity. "Tjong A Fie played a major role in developing the economy while preserving harmony and cultural diversity in Medan," Basarin added.
Chief Minister of Perlis, Malaysia, Abu Bakar bin Hamzah expressed warm appreciation for the reception and noted shared cultural roots.
"It feels incomplete to visit North Sumatra without going to Lake Toba, and another great itinerary option is Berastagi, there are noticeable similarities between the traditional culinary treats served here and those in Malaysia, even if the names differ slightly," Abu Bakar bin Hamzah remarked. ***
