RRI.CO.ID, Lumajang – Authorities confirmed that 170 climbers evacuated from Mount Semeru in East Java are safe after a forest fire broke out in the Ranu Kembang block, prompting the closure of all hiking routes.
Spokesperson for the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park (TNBTS), Endrip Wahyutama, said on Thursday, August 27, 2026, that all climbers were descending under the guidance of registered Semeru mountain guides.
“Around 170 climbers are now on their way down, accompanied by guides, and all are in safe condition,” he noted via WhatsApp messages, as quoted by Antara.
He explained that the group had camped at Ranu Kumbolo, the only designated camping ground on Semeru. Guides and park officers stationed at Ranu Pani have moved up the trail to assist and anticipate any difficulties during the descent.
Earlier on Wednesday, August 26, TNBTS officially closed all hiking routes following the fire in Ranu Kembang. The decision was announced through an official circular to ensure firefighting efforts and visitor evacuation could proceed safely.
Officials said the blaze was located near the hiking trail area, raising risks for climbers. The closure will remain in effect until further notice. The park authority emphasized that safety remains the top priority as teams continue to monitor conditions and support firefighting operations. ***
