Dieng Culture Festival 2026 Combines Jazz, Local Coffee, and Sacred Rituals

RRI.CO.ID, Banjarnegara - The 2026 Dieng Culture Festival (DCF) in Banjarnegara, Central Java, is introducing a new approach to promoting local commodities through a combination of arts performances and creative-economy exhibitions. Through the Dieng Coffee Festival and the Jazz Above the Clouds Showcase at the Gatotkaca Venue, the annual event is using the popularity of contemporary music to elevate mountain-grown coffee products while expanding market access for local micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
DCF General Coordinator, Alif Faozi, said the festival serves as a collaborative platform involving communities, administration, academics, media organizations and businesses.
“Our festival is a gotong royong (mutual cooperation) festival involving the community, academics, media, administration, and business operators,” he said in Banjarnegara on Tuesday, August 25, 2026.
Alif said DCF 2026 brings together tradition, arts, nature and community empowerment. The series of activities has therefore been designed to give local residents opportunities to benefit economically from rising tourist arrivals. Accommodation occupancy in the Dieng area ahead of the festival has reached around 95 percent.
“If there are still vacancies, there may only be one or two. I have even had difficulty finding lodging when several friends were looking for accommodation,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
He said the surge in accommodation demand is not limited to Dieng Kulon Village. Overflow bookings have extended to Karangtengah Village in Batur Subdistrict, Banjarnegara, as well as Dieng Wetan Village in Wonosobo Regency.
According to him, the high demand for accommodation reflects strong tourist interest while also generating economic benefits for local communities. DCF 2026 will also feature an MSME Expo at the Arjuna Venue, providing promotional and marketing opportunities for local businesses.
In addition, the Dieng Coffee Festival and Jazz Above the Clouds Showcase at the Gatotkaca Venue are expected to broaden the economic potential of coffee commodities while strengthening the area’s tourism appeal.
The festival’s main event, the Ruwatan Anak Berambut Gimbal (dreadlocked children purification) ritual for children with naturally matted hair, is scheduled to take place at the Arjuna Temple complex on August 29. The sacred ritual is provisionally set to involve 13 children from Banjarnegara, Wonosobo and Batang.
“More than 40 children with matted hair registered to participate in the ritual. Following the curation process, 30 children were selected, and based on the latest screening, 13 children have been confirmed to take part in the ritual and will have their requests facilitated,” said Alif.
Separately, Banjarnegara Regent, Amalia Desiana, said the regional administration supports DCF as part of efforts to strengthen the local economy, particularly for residents of Dieng Kulon Village. She said the Dieng Pandawa Tourism Awareness Group (Pokdarwis) has spent 16 years developing DCF into a community-based tourism industry that contributes to improving people’s livelihoods.
“A Bank Indonesia report in 2025 recorded that money circulating in the Dieng Plateau area during the festival exceeded IDR40 billion (USD2.26 million), even though tourists stayed for only one night on average,” she said. ***
