Tidore Village Relies on Ake Goa Spring and Tankers Amid Prolonged Drought

RRI.CO.ID, Ternate - The Tidore Islands City Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD) has been routinely distributing clean water to Gurabunga Urban Village in North Maluku using water tankers.
The emergency response aims to support residents’ daily needs and prevent the clean-water shortage from worsening amid a prolonged drought that has affected the mountainous area for the past two months.
One of the main water sources for residents is the Ake Goa spring, which they rely on for drinking, bathing, and other household needs.
A Gurabunga resident, Gogo, said the Ake Goa spring has become the community’s primary water source because it is closer to the settlement than the city, where residents would incur additional transportation costs.
“We chose this place because going to the city would require extra transportation costs. Fortunately, there is a spring here, and it is closer than going to the city,” he said on Sunday, August 9, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Gogo said the current dry season has increased residents’ dependence on the spring. Even so, the water flow at Ake Goa remains sufficient to meet daily needs.
He noted that the situation differs from a prolonged drought several years ago, when the dry season lasted up to nine months and caused a significant decline in water flow.
“Last year, the dry season caused the water in the Ake Goa area to nearly dry up. The drought that occurred several years ago lasted quite a long time, around nine months, which was the longest,” he said, as quoted by Antara.
In addition to relying on the spring, Gurabunga residents have also received support from the Tidore Islands City Administration through the BPBD, which has been distributing clean water using tankers. The assistance is provided regularly to help meet residents’ needs during the dry season.
“Thankfully, amid the drought in Gurabunga, the BPBD has provided support by distributing clean water with tankers. This has helped meet residents’ needs,” he added.
Gogo also urged the local government to improve access to the water source. The Ake Goa spring is located about one kilometer from the Gurabunga settlement, and the difficult road conditions pose an additional challenge for residents collecting water.
“My hope is that the administration will pave the road from the village to the spring. If the road is improved, residents will certainly have an easier time collecting water,” he concluded. ***
