Ministry Sends 18,000L Water to Drought Victims in Aceh Besar

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s Public Works Ministry has distributed 18,000 liters of clean water to residents affected by drought in Aceh Besar Regency, Aceh Province. The assistance forms part of the administration’s efforts to meet basic community needs during an extended dry season.
Public Works Minister Dody Hanggodo, said that water provision is a critical foundation for development amid the impacts of climate change. He emphasized that access to quality water services must remain available to communities facing drought threats exacerbated by El Niño conditions.
“In a world that is constantly changing and filled with uncertainty, water is a very important foundation. Moreover, water is also a main pillar of sustainable development,” said Minister Dody on Thursday, August 6, 2026.
Previously, the Aceh Besar Regency Administration declared a state of emergency for dry hydrometeorological disasters through a 2026 regent’s decree. The designation serves as the basis for accelerating drought response in coordination with the central government and related agencies.
Through its Sumatra I River Basin Agency (BWS Sumatera I), the Public Works Ministry has prepared nine water pumps to support agricultural irrigation needs. The Aceh Besar Regency Administration will also reorganize the management of irrigation water distribution in affected areas.
Meanwhile, the Aceh Disaster Mitigation and Fire Agency (BPBPK) deployed eight personnel along with water tanker vehicles to support clean water distribution. The regional water utility Tirta Mountala Regional Public Water Company (PDAM) supplied raw water sources, which were then distributed in collaboration with the Aceh Besar Regional Disaster Mitigation Agency (BPBD).
The aid distribution has been carried out in stages at the Kota Reuntang Complex in Seulimeum Subdistrict, Aceh Besar Regency, since Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The assistance reached residents of Ujong Keupula, Lampanah, and Ujong Mesjid villages, which are experiencing a clean water crisis.
A total of 18,000 liters of clean water was successfully distributed to approximately 170 households, or 512 individuals affected by the drought. Aid distribution will continue according to community needs through coordination between local administration and related agencies.
The Public Works Ministry remains committed to strengthening drought impact mitigation through the provision of basic services to communities. Coordination with all stakeholders is ongoing to ensure effective and targeted aid distribution. (Annaila Azzahra-EN)
