RRI.CO.ID, Brebes - The move by Generation Z (Gen Z) in Pandansari, Brebes Regency, Central Java, to choose coffee farming as their profession has proven to yield sweet results. Not only as coffee drinkers but also as cultivators, they have applied various modern post-harvest processing strategies, enabling their products to reach international markets.

One of the Gen Z coffee farmers in Brebes, Agung, explained what first motivated him to enter the coffee industry. “The coffee world is very enjoyable, and the environment is friendly. Aside from financial reasons or profit, coffee conversations always open up new business networks because coffee from each region, or origin, has its own story and characteristics,” he said on Wednesday, August 8, 2026.

Observing the rising trend of coffee enthusiasts and consumers over the past few years also encouraged him to establish and manage his own coffee plantation, rather than remaining only a consumer. To date, the coffee plantation he manages covers more than 4 hectares.

The application of varied post-harvest methods has become one of the main keys to the appeal of their products. These young farmers are skilled in Natural and Washed processing methods, as well as experimental processing such as Anaerobic.

In addition, online marketing through Instagram and commercial websites connected to international payment systems such as PayPal has made export transactions easier.

Through integrated management from upstream to downstream, their market reach has expanded across four islands in Indonesia, such as Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, and Bali, as well as to countries such as Malaysia and Japan.

This independent business is able to generate an annual turnover of up to around IDR 50 million (USD 2,788.77) per year. However, Agung still faces challenges from rainy-season weather, which can make the drying process take more than a month.

Fluctuations in local coffee cherry prices are also a challenge, given that green bean prices in the market tend to remain relatively fixed. Despite these operational constraints, the Gen Z farmers’ commitment to maintaining product quality remains strong in order to support the sustainability of national coffee supply.
