RRI.CO.ID, Kupang - The East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Provincial Administration is accelerating the development of its regional seaweed industry by establishing five dedicated cultivation clusters aimed at building an integrated ecosystem from upstream production to downstream processing.
The strategy addresses long-standing upstream bottlenecks, such as the threat of ice-ice disease, climate change impacts on water quality, and supply shortages of high-quality seeds, as well as downstream challenges, including a heavy reliance on raw dried seaweed exports, limited processing infrastructure, and restricted export market access.
To overcome these hurdles, the provincial administration, in partnership with the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (KKP), universities, and industry partners, is introducing climate-adaptive technology and Good Fish Cultivation Practices (CBIB). The initiative aligns with blue economy principles to drive coastal economic growth while safeguarding marine ecosystems.
Provincial authorities highlighted that creating integrated production clusters will help capture higher economic value locally rather than exporting raw, unprocessed materials to other regions.
Acting Head of the NTT Marine Affairs and Fisheries Agency, Stefania Tunga Boro, outlined the administration's strategic focus on strengthening the supply chain.
"The NTT Provincial Administration continues to build an integrated seaweed industry ecosystem through the development of five cultivation clusters, the provision of superior seeds, the construction of seed nurseries, capacity building for farmers, and the development of processing industries," Stefania stated in Kupang on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Stefania emphasized the long-term vision of transforming seaweed into a sustainable economic driver for coastal communities.
"Through the development of these five cultivation clusters, the local administration hopes the seaweed supply chain can be strengthened while encouraging the growth of processing industries in NTT so that the commodity's added value can be enjoyed by local communities," Stefania added. ***
