Rice-Field Eels from South Kalimantan Enter China Market

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - South Kalimantan’s fisheries sector has recorded major economic potential through rice-field eel, which has successfully entered the China market. Based on data from the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry, the export value of the commodity has reached IDR 3.5 billion (USD 216,049) from a total shipment volume of 170 tons.
Rice-field eel (Monopterus albus) from South Kalimantan has been confirmed to meet export quality requirements. According to Head of the Ministry’s Quality Control and Supervision Agency for Marine and Fisheries Products, Ishartini, compliance was demonstrated through a Processing Eligibility Certificate (SKP) and Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point (HACCP) certification, which enabled the commodity to be accepted in the China market.
“The product was accepted by China because the competent authority there (GACC) has recognized the fisheries quality certification scheme of the Ministry,” said Ishartini in an official statement in Jakarta on Wednesday, July 29, 2026.
She explained that the recognition is the result of a bilateral Mutual Recognition Arrangement (MRA) between the Marine Affairs and Fisheries Ministry and the General Administration of Customs of the People’s Republic of China (GACC). This cooperation establishes that Indonesia’s SKP and HACCP quality certifications are equivalent to standards applied in China. As a result, it guarantees the safety and quality of Indonesian fisheries products exported to that market.
According to Ishartini, South Kalimantan’s rice-field eel has also met processing standards by applying sanitation, hygiene, and food safety principles throughout the production chain.
She said the commodity has begun to show growth in the international market. Throughout 2025, exports of rice-field eel, both live and frozen, reached 170 tons with a value of IDR 3.5 billion. The exports came from two fisheries processing units (UPI) certified under the Ministry’s HACCP system and registered with GACC.
Head of the Banjarbaru Fisheries Quality Center, Yuni Irawati Wijaya, said her office continues to supervise the quality of South Kalimantan eel. The oversight covers inspections, monitoring, surveillance, and laboratory testing to ensure exported products meet international standards.
“Eel quality certification is carried out in accordance with international standards, and the same applies to other commodities. We are ready to assist business actors who want to move up and become exporters of eel or other commodities,” she said, as quoted by Antara.
China is one of Indonesia’s main markets for fisheries products. Based on Ministry data, Indonesia’s fisheries exports to China in 2025 reached 491,528 tons worth IDR 17.46 trillion (USD 1.04 billion). Major exported commodities included squid, seaweed, hairtail fish, vannamei shrimp, cuttlefish, skipjack tuna, and various other fish species. ***
