RRI.CO.ID, Temanggung - Paying with wooden coins will offer a unique experience for visitors to the 7th Lembutan Bansari Festival in Gentingsari Village, Temanggung, Central Java from August 8 to 10, 2026. In addition to requiring wooden currency at the plastic-free market, the festival, themed Udaya Sata Samriddhi (Restoring Tobacco Prosperity), is being held to revive the prosperity of local tobacco traditions.
Temanggung Regent, Agus Setyawan, praised the creativity of Bansari youth, who have succeeded in packaging tradition as a cultural and environmentally friendly tourism attraction.
According to him, the use of wooden currency and the implementation of plastic-free booths are unique concepts because they are rooted in tradition while also reflecting concern for environmental sustainability.
“Watching the nganjang procession, tasting snacks wrapped in leaves, and holding wooden coins are not just ordinary shopping activities, but a form of deep cultural diplomacy. Because we are not only celebrating the tobacco harvest, but also preserving the harmony of life and the economic sovereignty of the people on the slopes of Mount Sindoro,” said Agus on Tuesday, July 28, 2026.
He also invited the public to enliven the Festival Lembutan Bansari, which has been held since 2017, as a platform for cultural preservation, strengthening the creative economy, and promoting Temanggung’s distinctive tobacco potential.
Bansari Subdistrict Head and event coordinator, Ika Utami Widjayanti, emphasized the importance of the event. According to her, the Lembutan Bansari Festival provides a space for the community to introduce the tradition of Lembutan tobacco to young people and tourists.
The series of activities includes the jamasan cacak ceremony, or cleaning of traditional tobacco-cutting tools, followed by the nganjang ritual, which involves arranging or mass-drying sliced tobacco leaves.
“Lembutan tobacco is not merely a commodity, but the lifeblood of our people’s happiness and economy. Through this relaxed and interactive festival, we want to invite young people and tourists to help preserve our ancestral traditions, while also driving the village’s creative economy,” said Ika, as quoted by infopublik.id.
Meanwhile, Lembutan Bansari Festival Committee Chairperson, Yoga Listiawaan, explained that all visitors are required to use special wooden currency for transactions during the festival. The wooden tokens are available in three denominations equivalent to IDR 2,000 (USD 0.12), IDR 5,000 (USD 0.31), and IDR 20,000 (USD 1.23), and can be exchanged at the official booths at the festival entrance.
“This anti-mainstream step was deliberately chosen to bring back the atmosphere of old traditional markets that was warm and interactive. In addition, it is our real commitment to preserving nature. In the Jajan Market Village and MSME (Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises) area, all traditional foods from 13 villages must be packaged using natural materials, such as banana leaves, and the booth attendants will also wear complete Javanese traditional attire,” explained Yoga. ***
