RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - Banyuwangi, East Java is continuing to strengthen its international network, laying the groundwork for expanded bilateral cooperation with Australia across tourism, education, and public health.
The strategic push was signaled during a working visit by the Australian Consul-General in Surabaya, Glen Askew, who toured the East Java regency from July 20 to 22, 2026, to assess potential collaborative projects and deepen ties with local stakeholders. The commitment was formally delivered when Askew met with Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani at the Sabha Swagata Pendopo in Banyuwangi on Wednesday, July 22, 2026.
Askew said that his working visit aimed to reinforce the existing warm relationship between Australia and Banyuwangi while opening up new venues of cooperation that yield mutual benefits for both sides.
"We want to meet with the Regent to discuss what programs can be explored with Australia. There is much we can support, such as education and health as well," Askew said, as quoted by Infopublik.id.
Highlighting Banyuwangi's unique appeal to Australian travelers, Askew praised the regency’s world-class surf breaks, natural landscapes, and rich cultural heritage. He noted that G-Land (Pancur Beach) has long been a iconic haven for international surfers, particularly from Australia.
"One of them is that they love surfing at G-Land, which is very famous in Australia. Earlier, the Regent also told me about other beaches in Banyuwangi that are also suitable for surfing," he noted.
Beyond coastal tourism, Askew shared his personal impressions of hiking Mount Ijen, praising the breathtaking views over its world-famous crater lake and the quality of local culinary offerings.
"I have hiked up to Ijen, the view from above the crater is very captivating. The culinary offerings are also fitting, I also really like Banyuwangi because it is rich in culture, and its people are very friendly and warm. I will definitely promote Banyuwangi to our citizens,” Askew remarked.
During his three-day itinerary, the Consul-General also held coordination meetings with several regional administration agencies and the local Immigration Office to widen institutional communication and explore operational synergy.
Banyuwangi Regent Ipuk Fiestiandani warmly received the diplomatic visit, expressing confidence that closer ties with the Australian consulate would unlock tangible benefits across multiple sectors.
"Thank you for the visit of the Consul-General to Banyuwangi. Hopefully, the cooperative relationship between Banyuwangi and Australia can become even closer and more sustainable," Ipuk expressed. ***
